My Value Looks Wrong

Most “wrong value” problems have one of four causes. Work through them in order.

Prices update automatically, but not continuously:

AssetHow often
Stocks, ETFs and mutual fundsEvery 2 hours
CryptoEvery hour
Connected exchangesEvery hour
  • Market closed — outside market hours (and at weekends) you see the last closing price. That’s expected.
  • Mutual funds — a fund publishes its NAV once a day, usually in the evening, so today’s NAV may not be available until the next day.
  • Indian holdings — when our main price source is unavailable, prices come from the official NSE and AMFI daily files. Those can be a day behind.

2. The holding is a value you typed in, not a live price

Section titled “2. The holding is a value you typed in, not a live price”

If you added a holding by entering its total value instead of a number of units, that value stays fixed — it doesn’t move with the market. The holding’s detail page tells you when this is the case and shows the current market price next to your figure.

Fix: edit the holding and enter the number of units you own. From then on it’s valued at units × live price.

Some holdings have no public price at all, so they always use the value you enter: PMS, AIFs, unlisted and private shares, property, and fixed deposits. Update these by hand when you get a new statement — Entry Reminders can prompt you.

A live price needs a recognised symbol. If you typed a name without picking a result from the search list, the holding has no price feed.

Fix: edit the holding, search for the asset again and pick it from the list. For Indian shares, choose the listing ending in .NS (NSE) or .BO (BSE) — a plain symbol like TCS can match a company on a foreign exchange. See Can’t Find My Stock or Fund.

When a holding has transactions, its units, cost and value are worked out from those transactions. Editing the total value or cost directly on the holding won’t stick — the next recalculation puts back the figure the transactions add up to.

Fix: open the holding’s detail page, look at the transaction list, and correct, add or delete the transaction that’s wrong. Common culprits:

  • a missing buy (so you appear to hold fewer units)
  • a sell entered as a buy
  • a price entered per lot instead of per unit, or as the total instead of per unit
  • a transaction entered twice

Each holding keeps its own currency (for example US shares in dollars), and your totals are converted to your display currency at the latest exchange rate. A total can shift slightly when exchange rates move even if the price didn’t — see Multi-Currency Support.
