Connect Claude to your portfolio
This lesson covers what the connection involves and what you can do once it works. The exact click-by-click steps, which change as Claude’s menus change, live in the Connect Your AI documentation — follow that page while reading this one for context.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”You need:
- An Agni Folio account with some holdings in it. Connecting an empty portfolio works but has nothing to report.
- Claude Desktop, or another Claude surface that supports custom connectors.
- Two minutes.
You do not need an API key, a developer account, or anything from a terminal.
What the connection looks like
Section titled “What the connection looks like”You add a remote MCP server in Claude’s connector settings, using the URL:
https://agnifolio.com/mcpFrom there the flow is automatic:
- Claude discovers the server. It reads what tools are available and how to authenticate. This uses Dynamic Client Registration, which is why no pre-registration or key is needed.
- You are sent to an Agni Folio consent screen. This is on agnifolio.com, in your browser, and you sign in normally.
- You choose scopes. Reading your portfolio, and optionally writing to it. If you are unsure, grant read only — you can widen it later.
- You are returned to Claude, connected.
Claude never receives your password. It receives a token limited to the scopes you approved.
Read-only or write?
Section titled “Read-only or write?”Worth a moment’s thought.
Read only lets Claude answer questions about your portfolio and nothing else. Nothing can be changed. This is the right default and covers most of what people actually want.
Write additionally lets Claude propose changes — recording a transaction, adding a holding. It cannot complete them on its own: proposals appear as a confirmation card inside Agni Folio that you approve or reject.
So even with write granted, the AI cannot silently alter your records. But read-only removes the question entirely, and you can add write access the day you find yourself wanting it.
What to ask once connected
Section titled “What to ask once connected”Start with something you can verify, to confirm the connection is live and the data is right:
List my holdings and tell me my total net worth.
Check that against the app. If it matches, everything downstream is trustworthy.
Then move to the questions that are awkward inside any app interface:
Which of my holdings have lost money since I bought them, and how much of that is currency movement rather than the investment itself?
I am considering putting 10,000 into an index fund. Given what I already hold, would that improve or worsen my concentration?
Summarise my portfolio for my spouse in plain language, with no jargon.
That last one is genuinely useful and rarely thought of.
Combining with everything else
Section titled “Combining with everything else”The real advantage of connecting your own assistant is that your portfolio joins the rest of your thinking.
Compare my current savings rate against my goal of retiring at 55, and draft a short monthly plan I could actually stick to.
You are getting portfolio data, planning arithmetic and drafting in one place, which no single-purpose app can offer.
Managing and revoking access
Section titled “Managing and revoking access”From Settings → Connected AI inside Agni Folio you can see which clients are connected, what scopes each holds, and the log of calls made.
Revoking takes effect immediately. If you ever suspect a problem, or you stop using a client, revoke it — reconnecting later is another two minutes.
When it does not work
Section titled “When it does not work”The connector does not appear. Claude’s connector support varies by surface and plan. Check the documentation page for currently supported clients.
Consent screen does not load. Usually a blocked pop-up or being signed out. Sign in to agnifolio.com in the same browser first, then retry.
Connected but no data. Confirm you granted the read scope, and that your portfolio actually has holdings.
A change did not happen. Expected. Writes wait for your confirmation in the app.
Practice step
Section titled “Practice step”Connect with read-only access, then ask for your total net worth and compare it against the app.
That comparison is the whole test. Once the numbers agree, you can trust every subsequent answer — and you have finished what this course set out to do.
