Auto-Sync Your Banks, Brokers and Fund Houses by Email

Short answer: Agni Folio can now auto-sync your banks, brokers and fund houses through the statements they already email you. You get a personal forwarding address, set up a rule in your email once, and every statement from those senders is forwarded to Agni Folio automatically. AI reads each one into holdings and transactions, and nothing is saved to your portfolio until you review it and click confirm. It works with any bank, broker or fund house that emails you statements.

This guide explains how email import works, how to set it up in Gmail, Outlook, iCloud and other email services, what happens to password-protected PDFs, what stays private, and how it compares with uploading files yourself or connecting a bank-login aggregator.

The problem: your statements are everywhere

If you invest in more than one place, your numbers arrive in many different inboxes and formats. A monthly statement from your bank. A holdings statement from your broker. A statement from your fund house. Maybe a crypto exchange's monthly report.

Most people who live or invest across countries have accounts in two, three or more of them. So the statements pile up in email, and the tracker falls behind. We wrote about the bigger version of this problem in how to track all your investments in one place. Email import is our answer to the part where updating the tracker is a chore.

The one thing almost every financial institution does, in every country, is email you a statement. That is what email import uses.

How email auto-sync works, step by step

  1. Get your address. Open Settings > Email import. You have a personal forwarding address of the form statements+<your code>@import.agnifolio.com. The code is unique to you, so statements sent there land only in your account.
  2. Send statements to it. Either forward a statement email by hand (no setup at all), or create a rule in your email that forwards every statement from your bank or broker automatically. That rule is the "auto" in auto-sync: you set it once and future statements follow on their own.
  3. AI reads the statement. Agni Folio reads PDF, CSV, XLS and XLSX attachments, including attachments inside forwarded emails. Images and other files are ignored. The AI turns the statement into holdings and transactions.
  4. You review it. Within a minute or two, the statement appears on the AI Import page, already read and waiting for you.
  5. You confirm. Check the rows, edit anything that looks wrong, pick the account it belongs to, and confirm. Only then is anything saved to your portfolio.

It works with any bank, broker or fund house that emails you statements as a PDF, CSV or Excel file. If an institution does not email statements, use a manual upload instead.

Setting it up in your email service

The quickest way works with every email service and needs no setup: open a statement email, click Forward, paste your Agni Folio address and send. The steps below make it automatic. The same instructions are in the app under Settings > Email import, with your own address filled in.

Gmail

  1. Open Gmail on a computer (gmail.com). Click the gear icon at the top right, then See all settings.
  2. Open the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Click Add a forwarding address, paste your Agni Folio address, then click Next, Proceed and OK.
  3. Wait a minute or two. Gmail sends a confirmation request to the address, and Agni Folio confirms it for you.
  4. Back in Gmail, click the sliders icon at the right end of the search bar (Show search options). In From, type the address your bank's statements come from, then click Create filter.
  5. Tick Forward it to and pick your Agni Folio address. Also tick Never send it to Spam, then click Create filter. Repeat for each bank or broker.

Leave Disable forwarding selected on the Forwarding tab. The filter forwards only your statements, not all your mail.

Outlook and Hotmail

  1. Go to outlook.com, sign in, and click the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. Click Mail, then Rules, then Add new rule.
  3. Name the rule, for example "Statements to Agni Folio". Under the condition, choose From and type your bank's email address.
  4. Under the action, choose Forward to, paste your Agni Folio address, and save.

No confirmation code is needed. Some work or school accounts block forwarding outside the company; if yours does, forward each statement by hand.

iCloud Mail

  1. Go to icloud.com/mail on a computer and sign in.
  2. Open the mailbox settings, then Settings, then Rules.
  3. Click Add a Rule. Choose is from, type your bank's email address, choose Forward to and paste your Agni Folio address. Click Done.

iCloud also has a "Forward my email to" option, but we do not recommend it: every email you receive would be sent to us. A rule sends only the statements.

Yahoo, Zoho and any other email

Yahoo and Zoho ask you to verify an automatic forwarding address by clicking a link we cannot read yet, so for now forward statements from them by hand: open the statement, click Forward, paste your address, send. For any other email service, forwarding by hand always works, and if your service has rules or filters (usually under a gear icon), create one that forwards emails from your bank to your Agni Folio address.

Password-protected PDFs

Many banks and fund houses lock their statement PDFs with a password. Save it once under Settings > Email import > Statement passwords. You can save one password per sender, plus a default for everything else. Passwords are stored encrypted and never shown again after you save them.

If a locked statement arrives before you have saved its password, it simply waits. Once you save the password, that statement opens automatically.

What you still control

  • Nothing is saved automatically. Every statement waits on the AI Import page until you review and confirm it. You can edit rows before confirming, or ignore a statement entirely.
  • You choose what to forward. Agni Folio only receives the emails your rules or your own forwarding send to it.
  • Duplicates are caught. If the same statement is forwarded twice, it is imported once. A statement you have already confirmed is not imported again; it is marked as already imported.
  • Manual options still work. Uploading a file on the AI Import page and pasting a statement into the Astra chat work exactly as before.

Privacy

  • We never see your inbox. Agni Folio does not ask for your email account or password, and cannot read your mailbox. Only the statements you forward reach us.
  • The email itself is deleted. The original email is deleted from our mailbox right after it is read, and the statement file is not kept once it has been read, the same as a file you upload by hand. The one exception is a locked PDF that none of your saved passwords opens: it is held for up to 7 days, still locked and encrypted, so it can open by itself once you save its password.
  • Deleting your account erases them. Statements you forwarded are removed along with your account.

Limits

  • Up to 10 MB per attachment.
  • Up to 30 statements per rolling 24 hours per user.
  • Only PDF, CSV, XLS and XLSX attachments are read. Images and other file types are ignored.
  • It is as current as your statements. A monthly statement means monthly updates; email import does not show live balances.

Email import vs manual upload vs bank-login aggregators

Method How fresh What it needs Coverage
Email import (auto-sync by forwarding) Each time a statement is emailed A forwarding rule once; you confirm each statement Any institution, in any country, that emails statements
Manual upload or paste into Astra Whenever you remember to do it Download the file and upload or paste it Any statement you can get as a file or text
Bank-login aggregators Live or near-live balances Your bank login or an open-banking consent Only the banks and countries the aggregator supports

To be fair to aggregators: if every account you own is in one country they cover well, a live connection is more current than a monthly statement. The trade-off is that you hand over bank credentials or consent, and coverage drops quickly once you have accounts in several countries, smaller banks, fund houses or custodians. Email import is slower than live, but it works with any bank, broker or fund house that emails you statements, in any country.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Agni Folio sync my banks and brokers?

Through the statements your bank or broker already emails you. You forward them, automatically or by hand, to your personal Agni Folio address, and updates arrive each time a statement is emailed.

Will statements be added to my portfolio without me checking?

No. Each forwarded statement is read by AI and waits on the AI Import page. Nothing is saved until you review it and confirm.

Which banks and brokers work?

Any bank, broker or fund house that emails you statements as a PDF, CSV or Excel attachment, in any country.

What if my statement PDF has a password?

Save it under Settings > Email import > Statement passwords, either for that sender or as a default. It is stored encrypted and never shown again. A locked statement that arrived earlier opens automatically once you save the password.

Can Agni Folio read my other emails?

No. Agni Folio never has access to your mailbox. It only receives the emails you forward, and deletes each email from its own mailbox right after reading it.

Is email import free?

Yes, it works on the Free plan. Premium uses the more accurate AI reader for messy PDFs and scans, the same as for uploads.
